The 10 best luxury lodges in Kenya

Ten properties across the Mara, Laikipia, Amboseli and the coast that justify their rates, and a plain account of what the money actually buys you at each one.

Luxury lodges in Kenya do not all sell the same thing, and the price does not always tell you which one you are buying.

In the Mara it usually means exclusivity: fewer vehicles, a private guide, land you have largely to yourself. In Laikipia it means access: walking, riding, tracking on foot with researchers. On the coast it means a house and staff.

The failure mode is paying Mara conservancy money for a lodge inside the reserve that is merely well decorated.

How to choose between luxury lodges in Kenya

Work out which of the three you are buying before you compare rates. A $900 conservancy camp and a $900 reserve lodge are not competing products, even though the invoice looks identical.

What the rate includes varies enormously

Then ask three questions of anything on your shortlist.

  • Vehicle policy. How many guests share a vehicle? Is a private one available, and at what cost?
  • Guide tenure. Camps that keep their guides for years have better ones. Ask how long the head guide has been there.
  • What the rate includes. Park and conservancy fees, drinks, laundry and activities vary enormously. A cheaper headline rate is often the more expensive stay.

How this list is ordered

Not by price. By what each property is best at, and by whether we would send our own families there.

Balloon flights are almost never in the headline price

Where a lodge is included despite a real drawback, the drawback is stated. A property with the best food on the circuit and a mediocre location is still worth knowing about, provided you know which one you are getting.

What each region buys you

The Mara conservancies. Space and rules. Capped vehicle numbers, night drives, guided walking. The most expensive way to see the Mara and usually the best. See our private camps guide.

Laikipia. Activity. Horse riding, walking with researchers, rhino tracking on foot. Ol Pejeta is the obvious entry point.

Amboseli. The view. A handful of properties have a genuine Kilimanjaro outlook and the rest do not, which is most of what separates them. See the Amboseli hub.

White sand and reef water at Diani Beach
On the coast it buys a house and staff

The coast. Privacy and staff. Villas rather than rooms, usually with a cook.

A note on the word luxury

On safari it should mean a good bed, good food, hot water that works, and a guide who knows the ground. Plunge pools and thread counts are pleasant, and they are not what makes a trip.

An aerial view of a winding swimming pool nested within a dense grove of tropical palms near the sparkling waters of the Indian ocean.

The properties that get this right tend to spend on guiding and vehicles rather than on marble. It shows up in what you see, not in the brochure.

Before you commit

Cross-reference dates with our month-by-month guide. The same lodge can be excellent in September and a poor use of money in April.

Ratings on SafariBookings are a useful second opinion, since operators cannot edit them.
